Tuesday is Election Day. It’s a sleeper in California: Only a few scattered races for school board and a handful of local issues are in play. But in other parts of the United States, it’s a big deal. With exactly one year until the 2024 presidential election, high-stakes contests will be decided Tuesday in multiple states that could affect everything from abortion to voting rights. Several possible future presidential candidates will see their fortunes rise or fall. And there’s even a celebrity angle — voters in Mississippi will decide whether to elect Elvis Presley’s cousin as governor. Here are five of the biggest races to watch as returns come in Tuesday night:1) Abortion in OhioIn a landmark decision last year, the conservative-controlled U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, which had guaranteed abortion rights nationwide. Many conservative states imposed strict limits soon afterward.Since then, abortion rights groups have won election after elec...‘Party mom’ who wouldn’t take 17 years for alleged drunken teen sex bashes could face 31 years

SAN JOSE – With his team off to a historically dismal start, San Jose Sharks general manager Mike Grier said changes – to the roster and potentially to the coaching staff — will be in the offing if some improvement is not seen soon. After watching the Sharks get outscored 20-3 in their last two games and fall to 0-10-1 this season, Grier met with the players as a team on Monday morning and emphasized how unacceptable the start — and particularly the beginning of this homestand — has been.Grier said it was a one-way conversation.“I just felt they needed to hear from me and what I’m seeing and what I expect from them,” Grier said. “To let them know what’s happening was not acceptable from my end. There are certain things I won’t tolerate and some of that stuff has been happening, and I kind of let them know that. We’ll kind of go from there.”The Sharks were blasted 10-1 by the Vancouver Canucks last Thursday for their mo...Bay Area carpenter gets nail shot through tongue into head, sues nail gun maker

In Phoenix, Austin, Houston, Dallas, Miami, and San Francisco, hundreds of so-called autonomous vehicles, or AVs, operated by General Motors’ self-driving car division, Cruise, have for years ferried passengers to their destinations on busy city roads. Cruise’s app-hailed robot rides create a detailed picture of their surroundings through a combination of sophisticated sensors, and navigate through roadways and around obstacles with machine learning software intended to detect and avoid hazards.AV companies hope these driverless vehicles will replace not just Uber, but also human driving as we know it. The underlying technology, however, is still half-baked and error-prone, giving rise to widespread criticisms that companies like Cruise are essentially running beta tests on public streets.Despite the popular skepticism, Cruise insists its robots are profoundly safer than what they’re aiming to replace: cars driven by people. In an interview last month, Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt downplaye...Latest news
