Months after an investigation by the Bay Area News Group found Oakland was failing to help most of the city’s tiny home residents get out of homelessness, the city is deploying a $1 million federal grant in an effort to correct the problems. The $1.03 million fund will assist the city in helping people move from the tiny homes — small, rudimentary cabins designed as temporary shelters — to permanent housing and, hopefully, stay there. To start, the city will use the additional resources at just one of its seven tiny home sites. The move comes after a four-month Bay-Area-wide investigation by this news organization into the efficacy of tiny homes as a solution to the homelessness crisis. It found that residents at the city’s four “community cabin” sites — where residents live in bare-bones, shed-like dwellings and share portable toilets — move into permanent housing at a rate of just 28%. That’s far short of Alameda County’s g...Can Warriors get back on track at home against Bucks and Suns?

Home is an oasis for the Warriors. So this upcoming mini home stand off a three-game losing road trip should be something the team is looking forward to.But the two-game home stand won’t be easy. They have Giannis Antetokounmpo and the first-place Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday and Western Conference rival Phoenix Suns shortly after on Monday before they set off on the dreaded road again. No team in the NBA has a more drastic split between home and away records than the Warriors: They’re 27-7 at Chase Center and 7-27 on the road this season. Sitting in a three-way tie for the sixth seed as of Friday night, a trip home to play two of the league’s top teams could either galvanize a frustrated Golden State locker room or send them into an extended losing streak they can’t afford with just 14 games remaining in the regular season.“Got more games in the schedule to keep figuring it out,” Steph Curry said after their loss to Memphis on Thursday. “Part of ho...A major bank failed. NEW YORK (AP) — The financial institution best known for its relationships with high-flying world technology startups and venture capital, Silicon Valley Bank, experienced one of the oldest problems in banking — a bank run — which led to its failure on Friday. Its downfall is the largest failure of a financial institution since Washington Mutual collapsed at the height of the financial crisis more than a decade ago. And it had immediate effects. Some startups that had ties to the bank scrambled to pay their workers, and feared they might have to pause projects or lay off or furlough employees until they could access their funds. How did this happen? Here’s what to know about why the bank failed, who was affected most, and what to know about how it may, and may not affect, the wider banking system in the U.S.WHY DID SILICON VALLEY BANK FAIL?Silicon Valley Bank was hit hard by the downturn in technology stocks over the past year as well as the Federal Reserve’s aggressive pl...Bournemouth stuns Liverpool 1-0 to avenge 9-0 loss in EPL

BOURNEMOUTH, England (AP) — After losing 9-0 at Liverpool earlier this season, Bournemouth got some payback in the Premier League on Saturday.Bournemouth halted Liverpool’s recent momentum with a 1-0 home win to boost its hopes of staving off relegation and deal a blow to the visitors’ hopes of earning a top-four spot.Philip Billing scored the only goal in the 28th minute after being teed up in the box by Dango Ouattara and Bournemouth managed to contain a Liverpool attack that had looked rampant in a stunning 7-0 win over Manchester United last weekend.Mohamed Salah missed a penalty for Liverpool in the 70th, sending his effort wide of the goal, while Virgil van Dijk had an early header cleared off the line. But it was a surprisingly tame performance from a Liverpool team that had looked like it was finally getting back to its best after four wins and a draw in its last five games. That run that had seen Jurgen Klopp’s team move up to fifth place in the standings a...Lars Nootbaar brings ‘grind-it-out spirit’ to Japan and WBC

TOKYO (AP) — Most Japanese couldn’t recognize Lars Nootbaar a few weeks ago, before the World Baseball Classic opened. Few could even pronounce his name or spell it in English or Japanese. He’s becoming a household word in Japan, and fans are singing the praises of the St. Louis Cardinals outfielder at the Tokyo Dome, where he went 5 for 11 with two RBIs during Japan’s 3-0 start. The impromptu song lyrics have anointed Nootbaar as a Samurai and refer to him by his middle name — Tatsuji — which is his grandfather’s name. He’s playing with Japan because of his mother’s roots, the first non-Japan-born player chosen for the national team by ancestry.Hundreds now arrive at the Dome wielding pepper grinders, which has become his trademark with the Cardinals. Fans hold up signs calling Nootbaar an “American-born Samurai,” and his teammates address him by his Japanese nickname “Tachan.” Cardinals teammate Tommy Edman is playing in Tokyo with South Korea, also because o...Magical Kenya Open Scores
