Monica Gandhi’s new book combines lessons from HIV and COVID to better prepare for the next pandemic

UC-San Francisco Infectious disease expert Monica Gandhi has found herself at the center of many heated COVID-19 debates the past three years.But in her new book Endemic: A Post-Pandemic Playbook, she is combining decades of experience in infectious diseases and HIV particularly, with her unique position on the sharp edge of pandemic policies to present a 10-point plan to prepare for future pandemics.She discussed the book and her thoughts on what went right or wrong during COVID-19. Her answers have been edited for brevity and clarity:Q: What does the title of your book, Endemic, mean, and why did you want to write this book now?A: In the concept of infectious disease epidemiology, there are pathogens that we hope to get rid of in the world, and there are pathogens that we’re never going to get rid of. Mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus found in Anne Arundel Co., officials say

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health is warning Maryland residents that mosquitoes in two parts of the county have tested positive for West Nile virus.Officials said mosquitoes caught on July 11 were the first positive mosquitoes identified this year. No cases have been reported across the county, according to a health department news release.Maryland’s Department of Agriculture is expected to spray the areas near where these mosquitoes were found using an EPA-approved mosquito control option on Sunday after 7:30 p.m. Those areas include portions of Crain Highway and Davidsonville Road. Affected communities include Amberfield, Lake Louise and the Northwest Crofton Community District.Anyone planning outdoor activities is discouraged from going out while the spraying takes place in those areas.The West Nile virus can be spread by infected mosquitoes, who can transmit the virus to humans and other animals they bite. NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump’s company and his former longtime lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen have settled a lawsuit over Cohen’s claims that he was unfairly stuck with big legal bills after getting entangled in investigations into the former president.Lawyers for the two sides told the judge they had reached a settlement during a video conference Friday in Manhattan, just as Cohen’s 2019 lawsuit was slated to go to trial Monday in a state court.
