Pressing matters: 10 tips to iron like a pro My mother knew how to iron. I remember her standing over the ironing board, forming crisp fresh-smelling stacks of linens. I should have paid more attention.Instead, I have been bumbling along, pressing hot metal to fabric all these years as if I knew what I was doing. That changed last month when, some of you may recall, I interviewed garment-care guru Wayne Edelman, owner of Meurice Garment Care, a high-end cleaner based in New York. Edelman and I discussed how to get whiter whites. (If the discussion of whiter whites didn’t knock the planet off its axis, certainly the hot topic of proper ironing will!)During that call, Edelman casually mentioned, “Don’t steam iron cottons and linens. Iron them damp. If they’re dry, sprinkle or spritz with water then iron.”I have been steam ironing my cottons and linens — for years. “Why not?” I asked. “Isn’t that the same as ironing damp fabric?”“What gives cotton and linen that crisp finish is pulling the water out of the damp fabric...

UCSF Dr. Bob catches COVID for first time, shares cautionary tale SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Dr. Bob Wachter, chair of the University of California San Francisco's Department of Medicine, is no longer a "NoVid."Four years into the pandemic, Wachter caught the COVID-19 virus for the first time."Until this week, I remained a NoVid, which I chalked up to being fairly cautious, fully vaxxed and a bit lucky. This week my luck ran out. My case is a cautionary tale, particularly for the 'just a cold' folks. Mine definitely was not ... I literally have scars to show for it," Wachter wrote. As one of the Bay Area's most respected medical experts, Wachter took a cautious approach during the pandemic by wearing masks, social distancing, and getting vaccinated. Wachter was frequently featured on KRON4's newscasts for COVID-related interviews throughout the pandemic, and post-pandemic. On Sunday, Wachter worked a clinical duty shift at UCSF's hospital and wore a KN95 mask. After work, he noticed he had a dry cough. By Sunday night, he felt "flu-ish," with a sore ...

Justice Department urges judge to not postpone Trump’s classified documents trial WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department urged a judge Thursday to reject Donald Trump’s efforts to postpone his classified documents trial, saying there was no basis for an “open-ended” delay sought by his lawyers.Federal prosecutors last month proposed a Dec. 11 trial for Trump, who is charged with 37 felony counts related to the mishandling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate, though the actual date will be up to the judge.Trump’s lawyers countered this week with a request for a delay. They did not propose a specific date but said the case concerned novel legal issues, and proceeding with a trial within six months is “unreasonable” and would “result in a miscarriage of justice.” On Thursday, prosecutors on special counsel Jack Smith’s team responded by asking U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon to not postpone the trial beyond the December date they recommended. They rejected the idea that any of the legal arguments the defense intends to raise requir...

The Last of Us” a casa.

Rioter who hurled bow like a spear at police during Jan. 6 attack gets more than 7 years in prison WASHINGTON (AP) — A professional butcher whose bloody, wild-eyed face became one of the most memorable images of the U.S. Capitol riot was sentenced Thursday to more than seven years in prison for hurling a bow like a spear at police and attacking several other officers. Kyle Fitzsimons, 39, of Maine, was wearing a white butcher’s coat embroidered with his first name when he separately assaulted at least five officers near a tunnel as police desperately tried to protect an entrance to the Capitol from the angry mob of President Donald Trump’s supporters, prosecutors said. The federal judge who sentenced Fitzsimons also convicted him of 11 charges related to the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol. U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras heard testimony without a jury at a bench trial for Fitzsimons last September. The judge said Fitzsimons attacked police in a “burst of frenzied fury” and unleashed an “orgy of assaultive rage” that lasted a few minutes.“He was part of the most viole...
