JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Southeast Asian leaders led by Indonesian host President Joko Widodo are gathering in their final summit this year, besieged by divisive issues with no solutions in sight: Myanmar’s deadly civil strife, new flare-ups in the disputed South China Sea, and the longstanding United States-China rivalry.The Association of Southeast Asian Nations meetings will open Tuesday in the Indonesian capital Jakarta under tight security. The absence of U.S. President Joe Biden, who typically attends, adds to the already somber backdrop of the 10-state bloc’s traditional show of unity and group handshakes. CHICAGO — A 13-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was shot in the head in Englewood, Chicago police say. According to officers, the shooting happened in the 6000 block of South Elizabeth Street, just after 7 p.m. on Sunday.Police say the teen boy was standing near a sidewalk in the area when he was hit in the head by gunfire. Currently, it is unclear what led to the shooting. 6-year-old boy shot in the leg in Washington Heights The victim was taken to a local children's hospital and police say he is in critical condition. Aurora police arrested a 16-year-old boy Sunday in connection with an Aug. 23 fatal shooting of a man in the Del Mark Park neighborhood.The boy, whose name wasn’t released because he’s a minor, was arrested on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated robbery. After years of battling health problems, loved ones of longtime Smash Mouth front man, Steve Harwell, are saying their farewells to the singer, who is currently in hospice care at his home, TMZ reported. Harwell’s manager told TMZ that the 56-year-old singer has suffered from alcohol abuse for much of his life and that he’s reached the final stages of liver failure, which he had recently been receiving treatment for. After a series of transportation snafus hampered back-to-school plans for students along 20 bus routes, Howard County, Maryland’s superintendent of schools says the problem is beginning to ebb.“I am pleased to share that 11 of the 20 bus routes that were temporarily suspended last week will be restored for Tuesday morning,” public schools leader Michael Martirano said in an email to families Sunday afternoon.According to Martirano, the school system is planning to update bus numbers and details on the ongoing bus issue with Zum Transportation contractors before Tuesday.
