The Chicago White Sox continue to come up with painful ways to lose.Just when they thought they’ve seen it all, the Sox fell 7-6 to the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday at Kauffman Stadium. The game-winning run scored when closer Gregory Santos was called for a balk with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth inning.“He rushed it, it was down to one second (on the pitch clock) and he rushed it and it was a balk, clearly a balk,” manager Pedro Grifol said. While the attention will be on the last sequence, the Sox had plenty of opportunities to put the game away. Instead, they let a 6-0 lead slip away for their fifth straight defeat and fall to a season-worst 33 games under .500 at 53-86.“It was down to executing earlier in the game, it’s not just the last inning,” catcher Korey Lee said. “A lot of people just see the last inning but it was a team effort and we just came up short tonight.”Home runs accounted for the Sox offense. Normally a well-oiled baseball machine, the Tampa Bay Rays were uncharacteristically sloppy on Tuesday, at times almost daring the Red Sox to steal the game away. But just when it looked like the Red Sox might pull it off, the Rays swiped it right back.Trailing 5-2 entering the sixth inning, the Red Sox scored three unanswered runs down the stretch to force extras and pulled ahead in the top of the 11th. But in the blink of an eye the game slipped away, with Brandon Lowe hitting a three-run walk-off home run off Kenley Jansen to win it 8-6.Adam Duvall had just thrown out the potential game-winner at the plate to help Boston escape a perilous bottom of the 10th, and Luis Urias drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th on a blooper to shallow right field.Along the way the Red Sox also benefitted from two Tampa Bay errors and a number of other miscues on defense and the basepaths, which nearly offset the numerous mistakes Boston made itself. In the end, it wasn’t enough.R...Tuesday’s high school roundup/scores: Swampscott nips Gloucester in field hockey thriller

Japan’s Nikkei 225 index advanced but most other regional markets fell. Crude oil prices pushed higher, adding to inflationary pressures at a time when investors are hoping to see central banks back away from interest rate hikes. “While oil bulls are dancing in the street, the notable price uptick could prove challenging for central banks and financial markets, which were embellishing the current lower inflation groove,” Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management said in a commentary.Coming off the Labor Day holiday in the U.S., investors have few economic reports to look forward to this week, while the latest round of corporate earnings is essentially finished.Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 advanced 0.7% to 33,262.48. TOKYO (AP) — Prosecutors in Japan indicted a 24-year-old man Wednesday on attempted murder and other charges in the explosive attack on Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in April, Japanese media reported.Kishida was campaigning for elections in Wakayama in western Japan when a man threw a homemade pipe bomb at him. Kishida was unhurt, but two others had minor injuries. After a three-month psychiatric evaluation of the suspect, prosecutors determined that Ryuji Kimura, 24, is mentally fit for trial and that the bomb used in the attack was lethal, Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported. Kyodo reported that court records show Kimura may have been angry because he couldn’t file for candidacy in elections last year. The attack came about a year after former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot and killed while campaigning for elections. Gun and bomb violence in Japan is exceedingly rare, and the attacks on Abe and Kishida shocked many here.
