Will Smith, the San Jose Sharks’ top prospect, is officially a college student.Smith, 18, is starting classes at Boston College this week, roughly two months after the Sharks selected him fourth overall at the NHL Draft in June. The question now is how long Smith will stay in Chestnut Hill. Could he turn professional after his freshman year, or perhaps stay for an additional season, chase a national title in 2025 if he hasn’t won one already with BC, and sign with the Sharks in two years?Boston College’s standout freshman class also includes fellow first-round picks Gabe Perreault and Ryan Leonard, and Sportsnet draft analyst Sam Cosentino speculated that the college careers of those three players, who were linemates with the U.S. National Development Team, might be tied together to some extent.“I look at Will likely as a one-year college player,” Cosentino told this news organization before the draft in June. “What’s unique about their situation is that the whole line is going...Judge: Peter Navarro’s testimony is ‘weak sauce’

By Devan Cole | CNNThe federal judge overseeing Peter Navarro’s contempt of Congress criminal case on Monday called his defense arguments “pretty weak sauce,” injecting last-minute uncertainty into how the former Donald Trump adviser will be able to defend himself during his upcoming trial.Navarro, Trump’s one-time trade adviser, testified Monday in his defense during a key pre-trial hearing in his case. He’s facing charges for defying subpoenas issued to him by the House select committee that investigated the US Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, claiming he did so because Trump asserted executive privilege in the matter. But during the nearly three-hour hearing before US District Judge Amit P. Mehta in Washington, DC, the judge appeared highly skeptical of Navarro’s testimony, noting it’s from one side of the conversation.“I still don’t know what the president said,” Mehta told Navarro’s attorney Stanley Woodward, referring to a February 20, 2022, call during which Navarro said it ...Family disturbance leaves father dead, SJPD investigating as homicide

The three leading candidates vying for retiring Senator Dianne Feinstein's seat appeared in Stockton over the weekend to support Rep. Josh Harder's reelection campaign. Harder said that though Representatives Barbara Lee, Katie Porter and Adam Schiff were at his event at Lindley House, it was also a chance for voters to speak to the candidates. “This isn’t about me," Harder said. "This is a tremendous opportunity for these three candidates, one of whom will almost certainly become the next U.S. senator from California, to hear exactly what they need to hear from the Valley.” A conversation with Speaker Emeritus Anthony Rendon All three candidates had similar answers when it came to what issue voters were talking about.“Mostly concerns about the high cost of housing,” Schiff said.“The top issue in California is the cost of housing,” Porter said.“Who in the world can afford to live in California on 15 dollars an hour?" Lee said. "That’s a shame and a disgrace!” The representat...Raiders have to decide if O’Connell has done enough to become the No. 2 QB

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Has Aidan O’Connell done enough to become the Raiders’ second-string quarterback? That’s a major question for management and coaches as they decide how to reduce Las Vegas’ roster to 53 players by Tuesday. If O’Connell, who received a long look in all three preseason games, has played well enough to pass Brian Hoyer on the depth chart into No. 2 behind starter Jimmy Garoppolo could determine how many quarterbacks the Raiders take into the season. The Raiders could decide that Hoyer being the backup makes the most sense for now, to have a 15-year veteran who knows coach Josh McDaniels’ system from their days together in New England. It also could be important to have someone with Hoyer’s experience in case Garoppolo — who has an injury history — gets hurt at some point.O’Connell, who was drafted in the fourth round this year out of Purdue, has flashed potential in training camp and preseason games. If the Raiders vie...Florida prays Idalia won’t join long list of destructive storms with names starting with ‘I’

Floridians pray that when Idalia hits the Gulf Coast it won’t join the long list of destructive Atlantic Ocean storms whose names started with “I.”Since 1955, 13 Atlantic storm names beginning with “I” have been retired, according to the National Weather Service. That happens when a storm’s death toll or destruction is so severe that using its name again would be insensitive, according to the World Meteorological Organization, which oversees storm naming. Some letter has to be No. 1, and hurricane season often reaches its peak around the time that the pre-determined alphabetical storm-name list gets to the “I.”After “I” storms, 10 names that begin with “F” have been retired, as have nine storms beginning with “C,” University of Miami hurricane expert Brian McNoldy said.In addition to the 13 retired “I” names from Atlantic Ocean hurricanes, a handful of Pacific Ocean storms beginning with “I” have been retired since 1982.The U.S. began using female names for storms in 195...A University of North Carolina official says that a faculty member was shot and killed in a campus building

LOS ANGELES (AP) — There aren’t many things Chip Kelly can say he is encountering for the first time in his 29 years of coaching in college.Going into an opener with three talented quarterbacks and no clear starter is a new one, though. The UCLA coach said Monday that Ethan Garbers will get the start on Saturday against Coastal Carolina but that Collin Schlee and Dante Moore will see playing time.“It is a unique situation, but they deserve to play. It’s the only fair way to do it,” Kelly said. “They all competed at a high level. We said it was going to be authentic and organic, and this is what it is right now.”Other than Garbers taking the first snap, Kelly said the coaching staff will figure out how to divide the snaps later in the week.Garbers, a redshirt junior, has seen action in 11 games over the past two years. His lone start came in a 2021 loss at Utah. The Newport Beach, California, native started his career at Washington before transferring to UCLA in 2020. Garbers sai...Latest news
