In RiNo, some owners hope for reopening of block closed to cars since pandemic

Martha Trillo signed a lease before the pandemic to move her ice cream shop, Heaven Creamery, to the 2900 block of Larimer Street because it got more traffic than her previous spot a block away. Then the pandemic hit and the city, hoping to help restaurants struggling with social distancing, closed the street in front of her place.Three years later, it’s still closed — much to Trillo’s chagrin. She said blocking off the one-block stretch in RiNo may help the bars on the street, but it doesn’t help Heaven.“If you’re going to come and buy ice cream, you do and leave or stay and eat it and leave,” she said. “But you don’t see them get another scoop of ice cream. When you go to a bar and get a beer, you get a second, third, fourth.”RELATED: Here’s why this Larimer block wants to stay closed to cars while other streets have reopenedOf the handful of stretches of road that Denver closed to vehicles during the pandemic, three remain. Kidding, kidding, thanks for writing in as always. It’s turned into a bit of a funk with Jeudy, hasn’t it? Two of his three lowest production games by yards and targets have come in the past three weeks and in the other game — 51 yards against Houston — there were chances for so much more. It’s not fair to put all of it on Jeudy. Hark the Herald Offspring Sing: It’s never going to be easy to lose a headliner, and it wasn’t easy for KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas. Clearly, the majority of people at any concert are there for the final band and, even though in this case the headliner was supposed to be the Red Hot Chili Peppers and this writer holds the subjective view that they have been insufferable throughout their career, losing said headliner is a massive loss for the organizers. So what did KROQ do? They bumped the Offspring up to headline status, and added 311 at the last minute. Was that enough to save the show? Well yeah, but more on that in a minute.Almost Acoustic Christmas is always, year after year, a party. On Saturday, Canadian alt-punks the Beaches kicked things off with a high energy set of infectious, power-pop tunes that included one called “Blame Brett” (no offense taken, ladies).Bakar, from Camden Town in London, impressed with an indie rock vibe despite the f...

Tammi Brown hadn’t been feeling right for a while, when a persistent shortness of breath prompted her to visit her doctor for a checkup last September. She figured maybe she was getting out of shape, but the versatile Santa Cruz vocalist, who’s won faithful admirers amongst some of the greatest musicians in jazz, rock, gospel and soul, was quickly diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. The prognosis looked bleak. “The end date was days, not months,” she said. “I lost my brother last year from a heart attack and he was quite young, and I thought this was how it would end for me.”But a course of chemotherapy seems to have fought off the cancer, and Brown has even started singing again, including a performance last month with Bobby McFerrin’s Motion, the improvisational a cappella quintet that’s been holding Monday afternoon sessions at Freight & Salvage for the past two years.“I just did the oximeter and I’m back to normal,” Brown said on a recent phone call while walking around downto...
