In-N-Out Burger was built for speed.Founders Harry and Esther Snyder revolutionized the fast food world on Oct. 22, 1948 when they began serving customers on the go in Baldwin Park from a 10-by-10-foot hamburger stand in Baldwin Park, a Los Angeles County bedroom community that didn’t even have a freeway then. The chain will mark its 75th anniversary on Oct. 22 with a 12-hour festival at the In-N-Out Burger Dragstrip in Pomona, surrounded by the racing cars the Snyder family adores. The event is sold out.The history is related in a new book by their granddaughter Lynsi Snyder, who is now owner and president of the chain. It’s called “The Ins-N-Outs of In-N-Out Burger.”In-N-Out’s big innovation was built by Harry Snyder, a two-way intercom that allowed motorists to order food that would be ready for them when they reached the window.In-N-Out started out about the same time that McDonald’s began its quick-service operation in San Bernardino. (BCN) -- Walking and biking in two Sunnyvale neighbors is about to become safer for children going to school. The Sunnyvale City Council is slated to award a $3.9 million contract for pedestrian improvements in the Sunnyvale Neighbors of Arbor community, which includes La Linda and the San Miguel neighborhood. Residents in these north Sunnyvale neighborhoods have been raising traffic safety concerns for years. The area borders Highway 101, with long, straight roads that safety advocates say encourage speeding, and result in crashes into homes, property damage, injuries and even one death. If the city council approves the contract, FBD Vanguard Construction will install a variety of safety features that include high visibility crosswalks and speed indicator signs. The only Palestinian American member of Congress is under attack from her Democratic colleagues after she issued a statement that condemned a “heartbreaking cycle of violence” in Israel and Palestine and called for an end to the Israeli occupation. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., released the statement on Sunday, the day after Hamas bulldozed through the barbed-wire fence that separates Gaza from Israeli territory and massacred civilians, including attendees at a music festival. Israel responded by bombing Gazan villages and a refugee camp, and on Monday ordered a complete siege of the Gaza Strip. “I grieve the Palestinian and Israeli lives lost yesterday, today, and every day,” Tlaib said in her statement, going on to say that the end of Israel’s occupation of Palestine would create a just future for everyone.“The failure to recognize the violent reality of living under siege, occupation, and apartheid makes no one safer,” she said. “We cannot ignore the humanity in each oth...Hal Steinbrenner says Yankees may make personnel changes but he’s not sure yet

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The Democratic challenger in the Mississippi governor’s race has raised more campaign cash than the Republican incumbent so far this year, but the Republican has more money left to spend in the final weeks of the race, according to finance reports filed Tuesday. In a state where Republicans hold all statewide offices and a strong majority in the Legislature, first-term Gov. Tate Reeves discounted the fundraising by challenger Brandon Presley, saying Presley received $3 million from the Democratic Governors Association — making up more than one-third of Presley’s collections.“Ask yourself: why are they dropping historic money on Mississippi to flip it blue?” Reeves wrote on social media. “It’s because they know Brandon Presley will govern like a liberal democrat.”Presley is a utility regulator and cousin of rock ’n’ roll legend Elvis Presley, and he’s seeking to become Mississippi’s first Democratic governor in 20 years.
