UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ announced she will retire June 2024 — more than seven years after she became the first woman in Cal’s history to serve in the role.In a letter sent to the university community Thursday, Christ noted she had intended to end her tenure sooner, but once the pandemic hit campus in 2020, she “simply could not imagine parting ways with so much left to do.”In her final year, the 78-year-old plans to focus on key financial and housing projects still in the works, including UC Berkeley’s ongoing $6.5 billion “Light the Way” fundraising campaign and development of “The Gateway” academic building, which will house the recently formed College of Computing, Data Science, and Society.“I originally expected to serve as Chancellor for no more than three to five years. What I, or anyone else, never expected was a global pandemic that descended quickly upon the world and had the effect of slowing everything down, including our university’s most important eff...SF Giants’ Zaidi expresses support for Pride events as MLB backs down: ‘This is not a political issue’

LOS ANGELES — San Francisco Giants president Farhan Zaidi doubled down this week in the club’s support of the LGBTQ+ community, even as the league wilted in response to growing criticism from religious conservatives, including some players, over teams’ Pride-themed events.“To me, to the Giants organization, this is not a political issue,” Zaidi said Thursday during his weekly appearance on KNBR. “Celebrating pride is about love, support, understanding, and (I’m) just really proud of our organization and our players, the way they conducted themselves.”Zaidi’s comments, which he went out of his way to bring up at the beginning of the interview, came on the same day that commissioner Rob Manfred addressed reporters at the league’s New York headquarters following the owners’ meetings, during which the league’s relationship with the LGBTQ+ community was part of the discussion. While 29 teams (all except the Rangers) will ho...Santa Clara County passes $11.3 billion budget

OAKLAND — Aisha Weber testified Friday that she can’t remember every time Oakland police Officer Phong Tran slipped her a couple hundred dollars in cash over the years. But she said one payday remains crystal clear: A $5,000 cash gift from Tran barely 30 minutes after she finished testifying in a murder trial – one she knew nothing about, except the carefully-planted lines that Tran fed her beforehand. The allegation – which elicited a whistle in a courtroom gallery – highlighted testimony Friday morning in a key evidentiary hearing for Tran, who is accused of bribing a witness to falsely testify, and then later lying about it at trial.Tran, 45, faces five felony charges, including two counts of perjury, as well as charges of bribery of a witness, attempted bribery of a witness and subornation of perjury under oath.
