ST. LOUIS - Winter is on its way, and soon will come lower temperatures and higher heating bills. For Spire customers with limited incomes, the utility company is committing an additional $500,000 to help people pay their bills.“We definitely know there is a need out there," said Vonda Cotton, Community Outreach Specialist with Spire.She sees the need for funding in our community. Results: November 7 Missouri Special Election “We can alleviate some of that stress for our customers by giving them information and access to some of our utility assistance programs," said Cotton.Earlier this year, the Missouri Public Service Commission approved Spire Missouri’s extra half-a-million-dollar commitment. The funding supports low-income heating assistance, including weatherization and the critical medical needs program. Incumbent Mike Coffman declared victory in the race for Aurora mayor Tuesday night after securing a decisive lead over challenger Juan Marcano in early returns.Marcano, though, was not prepared to concede Tuesday night.Coffman had received 26,834 votes, or 55.32% of the total, to Marcano’s 18,224 votes, or 37.57%, as of the latest results posted at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.The third candidate in the nonpartisan race, Jeff Sanford, who ran a limited campaign, had received 3,400 votes, or 7.12%.As of 9:40 p.m., Marcano said Coffman has not yet called him, and Marcano said he was not conceding the race until more votes were counted.Marcano noted that the votes that typically come in on the Monday and Tuesday of an election skew more progressive. John Youngquist, a former East High School principal, trounced ex-Tattered Cover CEO Kwame Spearman in the race for the open at-large seat on the Denver school board Tuesday night in an election that could also cost two incumbents their seats.Youngquist held a 37-percentage-point lead over Spearman as of the latest results at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Three men have been arrested in connection with a shooting in Riverside County more than four years ago that left one of the victims permanently paralyzed from the neck down, authorities announced Tuesday. SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Two people were hospitalized after separate stabbings in San Francisco's Mission District this week, the San Francisco Police Department said. The first stabbing happened Monday at approximately 4:54 p.m. in the area of 14th Street and Woodward Street. SFPD did not provide information on the severity of the victim's injuries. One person shot dead in incident involving Oakland police The other stabbing happened Tuesday at about 5:50 p.m. at 17th Street and Guerrero Street. That victim has life-threatening injuries. DENVER (AP) — Despite seeing assessed home values soar by double digits, Colorado voters on Tuesday rejected a measure that would have lowered property tax bills for homeowners in return for decreasing a tax refund unique to the state that last year provided $750 to each taxpayer.Under the measure the the owner of a $500,000 home would have paid anywhere from $186 to $276 less in property taxes this year than they normally would, depending on local tax rates, according to estimates by legislative analysts.In exchange, after an initial increase in the taxpayer refund for everyone this year, the refund checks would have started to decrease and possibly disappear for people of all income levels over the next decade, depending on how much revenue the state takes in, according to legislative analysts.And renters would have gotten smaller taxpayer refunds — known as the TABOR refund, a reference to Colorado’s Taxpayers Bill of Rights — without getting any of the direct relief that homeown...Latest news
