Penguins keep pace in playoff chase with 4-1 win over Wild PITTSBURGH — Tristan Jarry stopped 27 shots and the Pittsburgh Penguins kept pace in the race for one of the two wild-card spots in the Eastern Conference with a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night. The Penguins bounced back from a miserable performance in a loss to New Jersey on Tuesday by putting together three complete periods, a rarity for most of the last three months.Kris Letang beat Marc-Andre Fleury, a good friend who won three Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh before leaving in the 2017 expansion draft, over the glove in the first period for his 11th goal of the season. Rickard Rakell, Jason Zucker and Jeff Carter also scored for the Penguins, who are trying to extend their playoff streak to 17 straight years.Fleury is already assured of a 17th consecutive trip to the postseason after the Wild wrapped up a spot earlier this week. Minnesota’s bid to chase down first-place Colorado in the Central Division took a hit when the Wild struggled to generate much in traf...

I-Cubs’ four-run ninth inning sinks Saints 12-11 in home opener The stage was set — on three separate occasions — Thursday afternoon at CHS Field for a player labeled to be part of the Twins’ future to emerge as the hero in the Saints’ home opener.Never mind that the Saints were playing before a spattering of fans on a 36-degree day, all eyes locally are on the lookout for the player who will take the first step toward making it across the river with the Twins. So a wild 12-11 loss to the Iowa Cubs stung on more than one level.Getting first crack was right-handed pitcher Bailey Ober (0-1), who was in the mix to make the Twins out of spring training. The 6-foot-9 Ober made his second start of the season for the Class AAA Saints — with mixed results. Ober surrendered a two-run homer in the first inning but responded by striking out the next four batters. He left the game with two outs in the third after the third of his three walks in the inning forced in a run to tie the score 3-3. Ober pitched three innings in his first start of the season, givin...

Cap-and-invest in NYS budget ALBANY, N.Y. (WTEN) -- The budget is now five days late and lawmakers are still in negotiations. The Department of Environmental Conservation says the Cap and Invest program continues to be a  discussion. The program would make polluters pay for the amount of greenhouse gas emissions they’re putting in the atmosphere. Conor Bambrick, Policy Director at Environmental Advocates New York, said the Climate Action Council came up with this plan. "So they would cap the amount of pollution at a certain level, so we’re talking about the power producing sector, we're talking about transportation, we’re talking about industry and buildings, cap that and force the polluters to pay for every ton of greenhouse gas emissions that they are producing below that cap, below and up to that cap," said Bambrick. Governor Hochul plans for NYS to invest more in Green Energy But if a company goes over that cap, they pay more. The goal is to incentivize industries to reduce pollution and produce revenue...

Kiszla: Tip your cap and drink up to salute two Colorado-born pitchers that made Rockies’ home-opener a rockin’-good party During the best drinking holiday on the Colorado sports calendar, the last call for alcohol came early at Coors Field. Not that anybody was complaining, because our gritty little Rockies won. They beat Washington 1-0 Thursday afternoon at the home opener when revelers traditionally gather in LoDo to celebrate the arrival of spring and drink to forget the bad baseball we’re usually stuck with in this dusty old cowtown. While baseball has long been Denver’s favorite drinking game, this home opener was a celebration of something far more refined and rare: beautiful pitching. This masterpiece was memorable because it was created by Kyle Freeland and Pierce Johnson, two Rockies pitchers born and raised in Colorado.“The beauty about the day is you can talk about a Colorado starter and a Colorado closer. Isn’t that cool?” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “It was super great for me to see a bookend of Kyle and Pierce on opening day, and what it means to our fans and our team and our stat...

Jurickson Profar’s web gems help Rockies blank Nationals in win on home Opening Day In the Rockies’ 1-0 win over the Nationals in Thursday’s home opener, Kyle Freeland got the win and Kris Bryant had the game-winning RBI. But it was Jurickson Profar’s glove that saved the day. Profar, making his first start for Colorado at Coors Field, perfectly played a deep fly ball to left in the first inning, jumping up and snagging Jeimer Candelario’s fly ball at the yellow line along the top of the fence. Then, Profar made a diving play in the left-center gap to end the second inning and bring the Coors Field crowd to its feet. Those plays loomed large in the wake of only the 12th 1-0 game in Denver in franchise history.“Profar made plays today and that was a critical part of today’s (win),” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “It came in different moments, but all moments count.”The catch in the first inning, which came with a runner on first base, might have resulted in a run scored if Profar misplayed the ball and it careen...
