Orioles bested by former prospects Zach Davies, Christian Walker in 4-2 loss to Diamondbacks Two of Baltimore’s top prospects in 2015 led their team to victory Friday. That team just wasn’t the Orioles.Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zach Davies and first baseman Christian Walker handed Baltimore a 4-2 loss to open the weekend series at Chase Field.Five days after the Orioles were blanked by Colorado Rockies pitcher Ty Blach, a left-hander whose brief performance for Baltimore during its rebuild was one of the club’s worst, Davies did the same. Davies, who spent the first four years of his professional career in the Orioles’ minor league system, entered the game as one of the least effective pitchers in the major leagues. But he shut down his former organization, twirling six innings of one-run ball for just his second win of the season. After scoring a run in the first inning, the Orioles’ bats couldn’t muster another one until the eighth inning. Both runs scored on two-out hits from Ryan O’Hearn to score Gunnar Henderson. But Austin Ha...

Lowry: Vivek Ramaswamy offers up Jan. 6 fantasy

Lowry: Vivek Ramaswamy offers up Jan. 6 fantasy Vivek Ramaswamy thinks Mike Pence failed. The former vice president is a MAGA villain for doing his constitutional duty on Jan. 6, so Ramaswamy has to find a way to wiggle out of endorsing his conduct on that day, no matter how convoluted or inane. On “Meet the Press” the other day, he went with an alternative-reality critique of Pence. According to Ramaswamy, the then-vice president missed “a historic opportunity.” Pence could have forged “a national compromise” by leading the way on an election-reform package of single-day voting on Election Day (which would become a federal holiday), paper ballots, and government-issued ID.And that’s what Ramaswamy would have done — forge “national consensus,” whereas Pence missed his chance to “reunite” the country. As it happens, the only parties to whom Ramaswamy’s posited grand bargain would have been unsatisfactory are a) the United States Congress and b) President Do...

Dean: Supreme Court has weakened U.S. patents, cue Congress The Supreme Court has handed down momentous decisions over the past two decades on a variety of hot-button issues — from reproductive rights and affirmative action to campaign finance and the Affordable Care Act.But some of the most consequential rulings — for our physical well-being, our economic vitality, and even our national security — have flown under the radar. For years, the justices have steadily chipped away at long-standing intellectual property rights. By doing so, they’ve unintentionally stymied investment into critical industries, from medical diagnostics to artificial intelligence, that will determine our health, wealth, and security for much of the 21st century.Take, for instance, Mayo Collaborative Services v. Prometheus Laboratories. Prometheus Labs had sued the Mayo Clinic for violating a patent on a diagnostic test for gastrointestinal disease. The Supreme Court ruled in 2012 that the Mayo Clinic had, in fact, infringed Prometheus’ pat...

The ‘Future’ is now for Duran Duran on tour John Taylor was sitting in a bar in some student union when he heard a song that changed his life. But before Taylor could digest the enormity of the tune, the Duran Duran bassist heard another song. It also changed his life.“I remember a Sex Pistols song coming on the jukebox, and then a Chic song coming on the jukebox,” Taylor told the Herald ahead of Duran Duran’s Wednesday TD Garden concert with Chic and Bastille. “I was like, ‘I love both of these songs, I love them equally, but I can’t tell anybody.’ ”Taylor laughs at the memory. Back in late ’70s punks and disco kids were like Jets and Sharks. Nobody could find an overlap between the two scenes and sounds. Well, nobody except Duran Duran.“Punk had generated this incredible energy, it had printed and pressed thousands of young, barely-able-to-play musicians who just wanted to be part of this movement,” Taylor said. “As it got broader it morphed into what we call new wave, and new wave had a beat.”On Duran Duran’s 1981 self-tit...
