Lynx believe player development, not roster reconstruction, is path to championship contention

One day after the Lynx’s season ended in a Game 3 loss to Connecticut in the first round of the WNBA playoffs, coach and general manager Cheryl Reeve said players and coaches alike could walk away from the season with their heads held high, knowing they gave everything they had.“As a team, I think what we’re pleased about is that we maximized the group,” Reeve said. “I think we squeezed everything we could.”Frankly, that’s not really up for debate. That a team prognosticated at the season’s outset to finish in the bottom third of the league dug itself out of an 0-6 hole to not only make the playoffs, but push a top-three team such as the Sun to the brink of elimination equates to a remarkable season that exceeded any outside expectations. But those expectations are sure to elevate heading into 2024.“Now those same people go, ‘Oh, wait, Napheesa Collier is a top-five player in the league.’ Kayla McBride had a really fine season for us, and the expectation is Diamond Miller is go...5 injured, including 1 critically, after shooting breaks out at party in Pomona

PLEASANTON — Joseph Roberts didn’t know it, but before authorities found the dismembered body of his fiancée on the Alameda Shoreline, police had spent the past week surveilling him as he played golf, smoked cigarettes with friends and ate Mexican food. They’d listen to voicemails from another women calling him “handsome” and wishing him well, new records show. And now they were ready to arrest him on suspicion of killing Rachel “Imani” Buckner based on DNA evidence, in one of the Bay Area’s most shocking homicides in recent memory. On Sept. 6, police and the U.S. Marshals entered a Pleasanton apartment at 4857 Willow Road where Buckner and Roberts lived and immediately noticed strong indicators that they were standing inside a possible crime scene. There was an open bottle of Drano resting on the edge of a bathtub. The carpets had been removed just days earlier, and FBI cadaver dogs alerted to the scent of human decomposition in the bathroom, b...Bay Area high school football roundup 2023: Best of Week 5 action

No goblins were spared. My level 15 Beastren fighter saw no reason for them to live. I wandered through the world of “Dragon’s Dogma II” and chopped them down along with my party of Max, a mage; George, an archer; and Sara, a thief. If we saw a goblin, we attacked it.As a fighter, I had the strength to lift a rock and throw it at them sending the creature flying. When the pitiful foe raised a shield to defend itself, I just grabbed the monster, dragged them to a ledge and tossed them into the brine. I dispatched goblins so easily that the Goblin Slayer would have approved. In the hourlong demo I played at Capcom’s TGS By the Bay event, I received a good sense of the combat in the upcoming action role-playing game. It still retains elements of the original. Most notably, Pawns play an important role. In my case, one of them named Max had knowledge the land we were traipsing and guided us as far as she knew.Players will have no shortage of ways to kill monsters ...Photos: Bay Area high school football Week 5, 2023

TOULOUSE, France (AP) — Portugal finally has some points at a Rugby World Cup.Still no win, though, for Os Lobos. They couldn’t have come closer on Saturday, conceding a game-tying try in the 78th minute and then missing a penalty with the clock in the red to settle for an 18-18 draw with big European rival Georgia in Toulouse.“We have built a base for the future,” Portugal captain Tomás Appleton said.A match that looked to have been settled by two blistering tries from Portugal winger Raffaele Storti had a thrilling climax that left both teams unsatisfied.Trailing 18-13 and having been surprisingly dominated by the Portuguese in the second half, Georgia’s grizzled set of forwards summoned up one last push with two minutes remaining and replacement hooker Tengizi Zamtaradze grounded at the back of a rolling maul to tie the score. There were barely 40 seconds left as Luka Matkava booted the touchline conversion right of the posts.Portugal’s players breathed a sigh of relief...Girona beats Mallorca 5-3 to take provisional lead of Spanish league

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Girona routed Mallorca 5-3 to climb to the top of the Spanish league on Saturday ahead of other matches for this round.Girona moved one point ahead of overnight leader Real Madrid, which visits Atletico Madrid on Sunday. Barcelona can pull level with Girona if it beats Celta Vigo at home later Saturday.Under coach Míchel Sánchez, Girona is the revelation of the season so far. The modest team from Spain’s northeastern Catalonia region has won five straight games since a season-opening draw with Real Sociedad. After beating Granada 4-2 last round, it has now scored nine goals in its past two games.“(Being leader) is anecdotal, we are happy for the victory. Winning five in a row in the first division is not at easy task,” Míchel said. “Even more important than the results is the sensation we have, knowing that we are competing well and have a clear idea of how we want to play.”Mallorca went ahead early through a fourth-minute penalty converted by Vedat Muri...Woman killed after hit-and-run crash in front of Aurora hospital

KORNIDZOR, Armenia — Tons of humanitarian aid were en route on Saturday to Nagorno-Karabakh under the terms of a deal struck with the breakaway region’s Armenian leadership, Azerbaijan said. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Saturday said it had dispatched its first shipment of food and fuel to reach the mountainous territory from Armenia since Azerbaijan launched its military offensive earlier this week. The convoy of four trucks drove across the Hakari Bridge, crossing the border amid warnings of a growing humanitarian crisis among the civilian population.“We are looking at the different needs of the population,” a spokesperson for the ICRC told POLITICO. “And, underlining our role as a neutral intermediary, we are of course in dialog with all the decision-makers to be able to provide assistance that is much needed.”The delivery marks only the second time civilian aid will reach Nagorno-Karabakh from Armenia since Azerbaijan closed...Latest news
